《自制英雄》是一部“另類”的法國“抵抗運動電影”，馬修·卡索維茨（Mathieu Kassovitz）扮演一位傳說中的抵抗運動英雄阿貝爾·德烏斯（Albert Dehousse）。就像影片的標題一樣，他是一個“自制”的英雄（self-made），他是一個從小做著英雄夢的膽小少年，在二戰期間做著推銷員、門童和服務生，但他依靠從各種渠道搜集來的關于法國抵抗運動的信息、照片和傳聞，在戰爭結束后把自己變成了在英國進行抵抗運動的英雄，甚至把自己說成了猶太人。諷刺的是，他因此成為臨時政府的高級軍官和幕僚，成為人人敬仰的英雄....
